Teguise, Lanzarote

Teguise is the old capital of Lanzarote, not to be confused with Costa Teguise, which is entirely different kind of place!

The village of Teguise is situated in the centre of the island, where for one day a week (Sunday) it becomes thronged with tourists looking for a bargain at the morning market. Here, you will find some lovely, crafty, gift shops to treat yourself or for presents to take home, but beware! It does get very, very busy!

Our photos were taken on a quieter day, to show you the beauty of Teguise without all the visitors. It is a village of cobbled street, squares and courtyards. There is an ancient church, Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, a Renaissance mansion, Palacio de Spinola and a 15th century tithe barn, now a bank, Caja de Canarios. One of the smaller squares hosts the old hospital (dating from 1473) and a 17th century army barracks. It was a lovely, quiet place to wander around in the late afternoon sun but it may be useful for you to know that many of the numerous bars, cafes and restaurants are only open on market day.
