Lanzarote, a Spanish island, is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean 125 km off the coast of Africa as well as 1,000 km from the Iberian Peninsula.
Lanzarote has three main tourist resorts: Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca (in decreasing order of size and liveliness), all three of which have been built around attractive beaches. Lanzarote is located 11 km NE of Fuerteventura and only 1 km from Graciosa. The first recorded name for the island, given by Angelino Dulcert, was Insula de Lanzarotus Marocelus, after the Genoese navigator Lancelotto Malocello, from which the modern name is derived. Lanzarote is bathed in perennial sunshine and is a popular holiday destination, especially with families. It has truly dramatic scenery: from lava fields and volcanic craters to huge, sandy beaches and picturesque coves. Most people arrive in Lanzarote via the international airport at Arrecife, the capital. You can choose a location from the Map of Lanzarote... Inland from these bustling resorts, Lanzarote is altogether a more quiet and mysterious place. Miles of rocky, black impenetrable lava fields, huge, barren volcanic mountains (which look for all the world like boiled eggs, which have had their tops chopped off), and quiet villages of whitewashed houses. The excellent road system provides a great opportunity to explore the whole island and there are many interesting places to visit. César Manrique The neighbouring Canary Islands of La Graciosa and Fuertaventura are easily reached from Lanzarote. La Graciosa is a 30 minute ferry ride from the north of the island, at Orzola.
